When it comes to nuclear, the gruesome incident such as Chernobyl and the deadly wars of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will always haunted the ordinary people including me. I'm not going to explain in details on what is nuclear and the process involved. The main argument here is whether the technology is viable and served as the best energy solution to mankind particularly to Malaysia.
Recently in Malaysia, the government had put a great effort into introducing the mechanism and the great benefits of nuclear power plant. The campaign set off quite drastically as to educate people not to rely much on fossil energy as a main nation's energy resources.
Malaysia can be considered as lagging behind compared to other asian countries in terms of nuclear energy application. However, this technology already establish in Malaysia since 1972 and was called Centre of Application of Nuclear Malaysia (CRANE) before it was named as Tun Ismail Atomic Research Centre.
It was converted to Nuclear Energy Unit under the Prime Minister Office in June1983 before shifted under the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment. On August 10th, 1994, The unit was later converted to The Institute of Nuclear Technology Research. Finally (Oh my, too many names) in September 28th 2006, the institute was branded and renamed as Malaysian Nuclear Agency. The institute only focuses on non-energy application such as medical, agriculture, industrial, manufacturing and environment.
The government of Malaysia try to emulate the other developed countries such as Japan or Korea, generating electricity from a nuclear power plant. As to Japan, the nuclear power plant supplies nearly 30% of Japan's total energy requirement. The electricity in Malaysia predominantly generated by using hydropower, coal and natural gases, which may not be a relevant nor a viable option. The construction of dam require a large land / forest to be sacrificed for the sake of steeply increase of demand, while the nation's natural reserves are diminishing. The fluctuating prices of the commodity also did not translate well for oil to be used as part of nation sources of energy. Ok, I'm done writing for now. Need to go to bed. Stay tune for the next chapter :)
